These two messaging apps have their own advantages and disadvantages. Here we are going to discuss the difference between Whatsapp and Telegram.
Difference Between WhatsApp and Telegram
Telegram has now more than 500 million users across the world. Where Whatapp has 2 billion users worldwide. So clearly, WhatsApp is more popular than Telegram.
If you look at the users based across the world, then WhatsApp has 2 billion users whereas Telegram has more than 500 Million users. So clearly, WhatsApp is more popular than Telegram, but both these messaging have their own user-based.
Here is the difference between WhatsApp and Telegram messaging app, which makes one unique from the other.
1. UPI Payment Feature
Whatsapp recently introduced the online money transfer features on its update. Now WhatsApp users can transfer money from their bank account to another WhatsApp user or other UPI holders hassle-free.
Where Telegram doesn’t have that feature till now in the application but hopefully they will provide the same in the future.
2. Group Chats
WhatsApp and Telegram, both offer the facility to chat with groups. But here telegram takes a big jump, the company offers 200000 users to add on a group. Where on WhatsApp, you can add only 256 participants to a single group.
Telegram has unique features that make the Telegram app more popular nowadays. In the telegram groups or channels chatbox, users or admin can create polls, ask multiple choice questions or create quiz questions where all the subscribers can participate. This unique feature is very much popular in telegram.
3. Customized Wallpaper
Telegram doesn’t have this facility to customize the wallpaper to every single chat. You can set wallpaper obviously but for every chat inbox.
But WhatsApp recently added this new feature where you can set a wallpaper for every particular chat. That is amazing and one of the best updates till now.
4. Channels or Business Groups
Telegram has a channel or business group long ago. You can subscribe to those channels, and you can also put them on mute. Telegram channels are very much popular in India. Telegram has lots of content-based channels for news, studies, online shopping, movies, web series, tech-related updates, and much more.
Where WhatsApp rolled out its business account which has only one to one chat mode option. Lots of large companies came and joined WhatsApp business accounts to provide better service. WhatsApp makes business easier for the MSME companies (small and medium businesses).
5. Add Story or Status
After the acquisition by Facebook, the company adds the same features of story or status features in WhatsApp. After this update, WhatsApp gains a huge number of users.
Anyway, in this update, users can post their image stories and add short video/audio content. On the other hand, Telegram doesn’t have this feature till now.
6. Media Upload
Telegram allows you to share any file up to 2GB, whereas WhatsApp does not give that many file size share options, there are some limitations on file size. On WhatsApp, you can share a maximum of 16 MB of data. Which is much less than Telegram. That is the reason many of the users switched to telegram from WhatsApp.
7. Third-party Sticker Support
Both the companies support cool cartoon stickers and live stickers on their platform. Telegram has better stickers and more types of stickers and emojis.
But WhatsApp gives you the facility to add third-party stickers to your WhatsApp account. Which makes users more flexible while using WhatsApp.
8. Video Calling
Telegram and WhatsApp, both support voice calling services but when it comes to video calling, Telegram has a major drawback on this. Telegram never supports video calling.
Lots of other chatting or instant messaging applications support video calling along with WhatsApp, but telegram still does not give the facility of video calling. However, we are hoping the company will add this feature in upcoming updates.
9. Private Chats
In the Telegram application, there is a feature named Private chats. Where you can create a private chat with another user, surprisingly this feature does not need even your number as well. In this chatbox, you can set the expiration time up to 2 minutes. After that, the chats will disappear automatically.
This is end-to-end encrypted and here nobody can take screenshots too. If someone tries to take a screenshot, the application sends you an alert. Which is a pretty amazing feature.
Both the messaging app have their unique features and they have their own users. If you want a pure messaging experience with chat, video, audio call features then Whatsapp is the best option.
Now if you want to follow content-based channels for news, studies, online shopping, movies, web series, and tech-related, then Telegram is the best option.
It will also depend on your friend and family circle. If they use WhatsApp, then you will come up using WhatsApp and vice-versa.
