How to Change your Computer Name in Windows 11

By default, Windows 11 automatically assigns a random name to your PC. If you like to change the PC name, it is pretty simple. Here we will discuss a few ways by which you can change your computer (PC) name on Windows 11.

A computer (PC) name is a unique identifier for your machine. It is simpler to locate your computer on a network with several other computers, especially if connected to one. In addition, your PC’s name shows on system information and in the Microsoft site’s devices list in your profile section.

How to Change your Computer Name in Windows 11

Changing the name of your computer (PC) is quite simple, and if you are a beginner, you may use any of the methods mentioned. Here are a few ways to change your computer’s name.

1. Change Computer Name from Windows Settings

Step 1: To check for windows updates, you have to open the settings application. For that, click on the windows icon to open the “Start Menu” and click on “Settings.”

Step 2: It will bring up the settings window. Here click on the “System” tab and click on the “Rename” option to rename your computer’s name.

Step 3: In the pop-up window that opens, type a new name for your PC, and click “Next“.

Note: For the computer name, you can use alphabetical characters, numerical characters, and a hyphen (-). Special characters are not allowed.

Step 4: Now, to apply the change, you have to restart your computer. For that, click on the “Restart Now” button. After that, you will find the new computer name mentioned in Settings.

2. Change Computer Name from the About Section

There’s another way to change your computer (PC) name from the “About” section. Here’s how you can change the computer name from the about section:

Step 1: Open the windows “Settings” app as described earlier.

Step 2: Now select “System,” then go to the bottom of the right-hand window and select “About“. Here you will find the option to change your computer name.

Step 3: On the next page, next to your PC’s present name, click the “Rename this PC” button. To change the name of your computer, type in a new name.

Step 4: After that, you’ll see the same “Rename Your PC” pop-up window as in the previous method. As explained, on the pop-up window, type your desired PC name and click “Next“. Now click the “Restart Now” button to change the name.

3. Change Computer Name from System Properties

You can also change your computer name from “System Properties”. To do so, follow the following steps:

Step 1: Open the “Run” application. Use the “Win + R” shortcut key to launch the Run application. To open the “System Properties” window, type sysdm.cpl and press Enter.

Step 2: Click on the “Computer Name” tab on the system properties windows. Here, click on the “Change” option to enter the new computer name.

Step 3: Based on the guidelines we have discussed earlier, enter the new computer name and click “OK” at the bottom.

Step 4: You will then see a small pop-up saying, “You must restart your computer to apply these changes”. Here click on the “OK” and click on the “Close” button to close the main System Properties window. Finally, on the next pop-up window, click the “Restart Now” button to reboot your PC and apply the name change.
