When you buy a new Windows 11 PC, it comes with a built-in SSD or HDD. Mostly, probably hard disk or SSD will have a single partition. But if you want to organize your files into different categories, you might want to create a new disk partition. For example, if you want to store movies on your windows 11 pc, you can create a movies drive partition to organize your movies.
The bigger the capacity of your hard drive, the more partitions you can create. In Windows, Hard Drive partitions are referred to as Drives and generally have a letter associated with them as an indicator. Here is an easy guide; on how you can create a hard drive partition on Windows 11.
How to Create Hard Drive Partition on Windows 11
Creating a partition of a Hard Drive or SSD can be helpful in many ways. It is recommended to install the operating system on a separate driver partition, and you can create a separate drive partition for all other data and files.
If you want to reset your windows OS without deleting your files, you can only format the drive where the operating system had installed.
Creating partitions with labels also helps with organizing files. Here are the steps to create a driver partition:
Step 1: Search for the “Computer Management” on the search bar and open it.
Step 2: Now click on “Disk Manager” under the Storage option to see the disk partition. This window contains information about your existing drives or partitions. Disk 0, Disk 1, Disk 2 represents how many storage units, such as Hard Drives or SSD are installed on your system.
Step 3: To create a new disk partition, click on the box that represents the disk you wish to shrink. It will have the diagonal patterns inside the box, which indicate you have selected the drive. After that, right-click on it and click “Shrink Volume” to create a partition.
Step 3: You’ll see a pop-up window where you can specify how much you want this drive to shrink. You can choose how much space you want to take away from the selected drive. Here enter your partition disk space in MB, then click on the “Shrink.” For example, let me enter 10000 which is around 9.7GB.
Step 5: Now, it will create unallocated space, this space can be used to create a new disk partition.
Create a New Drive Partition from the Unallocated Space
When you shrink a volume, it will create unallocated space. Now is the time to create a new partition from the unallocated space. For that, follow the following steps:
Step 1: Right-click on the ‘Unallocated’ box in the Disk Management window and click on the “New Simple Volum” option from the context menu.
Step 2: The “New Simple Volume Wizard” window will appear. To continue, click on the “Next” button to proceed.
Step 3: On the Specify Volume Size window, keep everything default if you wish to create a new drive from all of the unallocated space. If you want to leave some unallocated space for creating another partition, change the volume size. Once done, click on the “Next” button to continue.
Step 4: Now, assign any driver letter from the drop-down menu and click on the “Next” to continue.
Step 5: Next, you can give the new drive name by typing it inside the “Volume label” field and also select the file system from the drop-down menu as “NTFS” and click on “Next” to continue.
Step 6: Finally, click on “Finish” to create the new disk partition.
Conclusion
In the Disk Management box, you should now be able to see the newly formed drive or partition. That’s it. This is how you can create a hard disk partition in Windows 11. You can also check our guide on how to change a drive letter on Windows 11 and how to delete a drive partition on Windows 11.
