Step 1: First of all you need to have VLC Media Player installed on your computer. Here is how you can install VLC Media Player on Windows 11.

Step 2: Now open VLC Media Player and play the video from where you want to take a screenshot.

Step 3: When you see a scene you want to capture, simply “Pause” the video. Now click on the “Video” tab and click on the “Take Snapshot” option.

Step 4: You will see a small thumbnail of the capture in the upper left corner of the screen. It also shows the directory the shot is stored in. By default, it’s saved in My Pictures as a PNG file.

You can also change the snapshot directory and its formats (PNG, JPG TIFF) and the file name of the saved picture file.

To configure follow these steps:

Step 1: Open VLC Media Play, click on the “Tools” tab, and select the “Preference” option. Or you can use the shortcut key F9 to open the setting panel.

Step 2: In the “Simple Preferences” setting panel, choose the “Video“ option and configure the options under “Video snapshots“:

  • Directory: Browse to the directory where you want the video snapshots files to be saved.
  • Prefix: The filename prefix which is automatically appended with the date/time of the file creation. Check the sequential numbering box if you want to use numbers instead of the current date/time.
