1. Pause Auto-updates in Windows 11

One of the easiest ways to prevent automatic Windows updates is to use the “Pause updates” option. However, as you can tell from the name, this is not a permanent solution as it will only pause auto-updates for 1,2 and 3 weeks and not stop it altogether. 

Still, it can come in handy in certain situations, so here is how to pause Windows 11 updates:

Step 1: For that, click on the windows icon to open the “Start Menu” and click on “Settings.”

Step 2: It will bring up the settings window. Click on the “Windows Update” tab and select the “Pause for a week” option to pause the windows 11 update.

Step 3: If you want to pause for more than a week, you can select the time frame from the drop-down menu.

Another way to turn off automatic updates in Windows is by setting up a metered connection. Windows 11 does not automatically download and install updates over metered connections, meaning you can restrict automatic updates on your system this way. Here’s how you do it

Step 1: Open “Settings” using Win + I shortcut key and go to “Network & Internet” from the left sidebar. You will now see Wi-Fi and Ethernet option. Select the option which is connected; to your PC.

Step 2: Click on “Properties” for your current connection and turn on the “Metered Connection” toggle.

Step 3: By default, Windows does not auto-download and install updates over metered connections. To ensure, go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options. Check that the “Download updates over metered connections” option; is turned off.

Note:- You can set multiple connections in Windows 11 as metered. Windows 11 will not download and install any update automatically. However, you can manually download and install updates over metered connections at any time; if you want.

3. Disable Windows 11 Update Service

In Windows 11, there are no such settings by which you can turn off windows 11 automatic updates. However, we have another simple option to turn off Windows 11 automatic update by disabling Windows 11 Update Service. To do that, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Open the “Run” using Win + R shortcut key. Here type services.msc in the text field, and click on “OK“.

Step 2: It will open the “Service” window. Here, scroll down to the bottom and double-click on “Windows Update.” This will open the Windows Update properties window.

Step 3: Here, on the Windows Update Properties window, click on the “General” tab. Now, select “Disabled” from the drop-down menu next to “Startup type”. Then click on “Apply” and “OK” to save the update settings.

That’s it; this will permanently disable Windows 11 automatic update. If you ever want to re-enable automatic updates on your Windows 11 PC. Visit the Windows Update Properties window and select “Automatic” from the “Startup type” drop-down menu. It will fix the issue.
