7 Common Myths about Computer Science Debunked

There are many wrong beliefs regarding computer science. So, it is necessary to enlighten students about the true nature of computer science. In this section, we will discuss 7 common myths about computer science debunked. So, here we go:

1. Highly Proficient in Math

Mathematics is essential for computer science. It helps in the analysis of algorithms which are the building blocks of computer science. While studying computer science, one needs to solve computational problems. The solution to such problems is encoded in algorithms. Thus, math is playing an important role.

For solving such problems, one needs to know high school algebra. But other problems related to machine learning or computer graphic need knowledge of probability, statistics, and calculus. If you are proficient in high school algebra, you can be successful in this field.

Moreover, some elements of computer science do not require skills in math. So, you do not need to be an astute mathematician to become successful in this field.

2. All about Programming

Programming includes some steps written in a particular language for fulfilling a particular function. Most of us believe that computer science is all about programming. But this concept is not true. Though programming is an important topic of computer science, there are some other branches too.

So, a computer science graduate does not require to be a programmer only. They can apply for several jobs in the IT industry. These include database administrators, solution developers, IT auditors, enterprise consultants, and security specialists.

Since computer science mainly focuses on logical thinking and problem solving, one can even apply for non-IT jobs such as ICAC investigators, financial planners, etc.

3. Boring

Another misconception is that jobs related to computer science are boring. But it is not at all true. Computer science professionals do not spend all of their time in front of computers. Moreover, the growing demands of the world give rise to new problems. So, continuous efforts for finding new solutions leave no place for boredom.

Besides that, software building is an interesting part of computer science. Building powerful, reliable software is always challenging as well as rewarding. It is quite satisfactory to create something based on own idea and vision.

Therefore, the creators can have total control over their mini virtual world. No doubt, it is fun to make everything possible in your mini-virtual world.

4. Difficult to study

Most students do not have a clear knowledge of computer science until they get into universities. But this does not mean that the subject is hard to understand. It is similar to most of the undergraduate programs in business and social science. Since the subject is not a core subject in secondary school, we often fear to study it.

However, this can be overcome by improving the teaching style. One can use block-based coding techniques or sophisticated electronic projects for teaching young students. It can help to build a strong foundation that will help them in the near future.

5. Suitable for Geeks

The term “geek” mainly refers to unfashionable people. These beliefs are imposed on the general public by Hollywood films. In most of the films, computer science professionals or students are represented as an awkward person who does not have a social life. Their whole life revolves around computer programming and gaming.

So, the myth that computer science is for geeks is completely baseless. Computer scientists also need good communication skills like doctors and engineers. Hence, anyone can be good at computer science as long as they have passion and love for the subject.

6. Cannot be Integrated with Other Subjects

Though computer science is an independent subject, one can easily integrate it with other subjects. In modern times, computer science can be integrated with other subjects too. While math is part of computer science, it can be integrated with other subjects like history, English. Especially while doing project documentation in English.

7. For Boys Only

Like other technical fields, computer science is also a male-dominated field. But it does not mean that computer science is for boys only. This misconception should be rooted out in your mind.

Many women have marked their success in this field with their inventions. So, if you are passionate enough you can also succeed regardless of your gender.

Hope you have liked the article and found it helpful. Like any other subject, there are also some myths about computer science debunked. But it is you who have to decide with facts. Moreover, if you truly love the subject, it will love you back and you will surely find your way to succeed.
