Ubuntu Linux is a popular operating system with widespread acceptance among users worldwide. One of the significant advantages of using Ubuntu Linux is its flexibility, which allows users to execute tasks through the command line interface (CLI) in addition to the graphical user interface (GUI).

The Terminal is a command-line interface used to browse and manage files by executing commands on Ubuntu Linux. The Terminal is also known as Command Prompt or Shell. This guide will discuss how to open the Terminal in Ubuntu Linux using various methods.

How to Open Terminal in Ubuntu Linux

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you need to use Terminal in Ubuntu Linux but you don’t know how to access it? The Terminal is an essential feature of Ubuntu Linux that allows users to execute tasks through the command line interface.

This article has discussed how to open the Terminal in Ubuntu Linux using four methods: using the Dash, using a shortcut, using the command, and using the context menu. Let’s discuss them one by one.

1. Using the Dash or the Dock

The Dash generally means “Dash bar” or “Dash Board.” Dash is also called “Dock.” It is a bar that displays the shortcut of the default applications icons, files, and folders of Linux. To open the Terminal using the Dash, follow the steps below:

Step 1. By default, Dash lies on the left side of the screen. So look for “Show Applications,” which is always located at the extreme corner of the Dash. Once you click on it, a new screen opens up with a search bar on the top.

Step 2. Type “Terminal” in the search bar. Click on the Terminal icon that appears in the search results. That is how you can open Terminal in Ubuntu Linux using Dash.

2. Using the Command

You can also open the Terminal using the Run Command. This way of opening the Terminal is quite easy. For that, follow the below-mentioned steps:

Step 1. Press “Alt + F2” on your keyboard. It will open a small window named “Run a Command” displaying a box to type the required command.

Step 2. Once this is open, type “gnome-terminal” in the box. Now, press the [Enter] key to open the Terminal.

Note:- The “Fn” key needs to be used with the above shortcut keys for keyboards with function keys.

3. Using the Shortcut Keys

Also, you can open the Terminal on your Linux system with the help of shortcut keys. 

For that, you just need to press “Ctrl + Alt + T” on the keyboard. Once you press the key combination, The Terminal window appears.

4. Using Context Menu

Another method of opening the Terminal on Ubuntu Lins is by using the Context Menu. To do so, follow the below steps: 

Step 1. Right-Click with your mouse cursor on the empty space, and a context menu opens up.

Step 2. Now, click on the option “Open in Terminal” for the menu that appears. And as soon as you click on the option, the Terminal window opens up.

Note:- The best part of this method is that it will open the Terminal according to the directory you are in, inside the files explorer.
